Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes are a British punk rock four-piece from Hemel Hampstead, Hertfordshire. Known for their energetic live shows and staggering stage presence, the group will release their fourth studio album, Sticky, on October 15.
Following on from their last album, End of Suffering in 2019, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes’ upcoming release appears to be a collective of tracks describing lead singer Carter’s battle with mental health during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The first track on the album is the self-titled ‘Sticky.’ This song begins with the band’s signature style riff before introducing some more synth-based sounds into the mix. It is instantly memorable from the first note! Next up is ‘Cupid’s Arrow,’ which appears to be about the trials and tribulations of modern love and relationships. Again, this song is an echo of their previous work.
‘Bang Bang’ featuring dance/electronic artist Lynks is next. We absolutely love the energy of this song, which is significantly influenced by punk bands such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash. Lynks’ involvement sounds similar to that of the Pet Shop Boys and is a great addition. ‘Take It To The Brink’ is all about pushing the limits with alcohol and just having a good time. ‘My Town’ is up next, featuring the IDLES singer Joe Talbot. This song describes Carter’s hometown of Hemel Hampstead and the realities of what you see when you walk down the street. It is very real and very infectious – definitely sure to get stuck in your head!
The next song is ‘Go Get a Tattoo,’ which is another collaboration with Lynks. This song is a nod to Carter’s tattoo business and its struggle during the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘Off With His Head’ features guest vocals from British rock artist Cassyette. Her powerful vocals elevate this track to the next level and are the perfect fit. It discusses the singer’s recent struggles with mental health and the shocking realities that come with it. This is a song that many people can relate to, as mental health has been such a huge issue with the ongoing pandemic.
‘Cobra Queen’ is a track that describes Carter’s latest love interest and their combined sexual chemistry. However, it seems like she is ultimately toxic and makes him question whether to stay or go. Finally, ‘Rat Race’ is all about the struggles he faced in the pandemic and the current state of the world right now. The lyrics are relatable and meaningful, the guitar riffs are instantly memorable, and the addition of the saxophone in the last section has got us well and truly hooked!
The last song is called ‘Original Sin,’ which features guest vocals from Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie. This song talks about how Carter feels influenced by the devil in certain situations and how it affects him. Again, Gillespie’s vocals help to add another dimension to the track!
Sticky is set to be released on Friday, October 15, 2021. Overall, this album is worth listening to and will please Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes fans everywhere!
