Combining elements of rock, metal, and electronic music, Weesp are set to take the world by storm. We spoke to band member Stanislav “Stak” Budko to see what goes in to such a band.

So, who are you?

Hello, my name is Stak and I play synth in the alternative post-metal band called Weesp.

Where are you from?

We’re from the capital of the Republic of Belarus – Minsk.

How long have you been together?

We started as friends and have had more than 15 years together. We’ve called ourselves Weesp, starting from 2007.

How long have you been playing music?

We were teenagers, dreamers, hated school and loved music.
Lex just came up with idea to create a band once.
Everybody really liked this idea, even despite the fact that we couldn’t play any instrument and sing. But we started to learn though.
I guess it all started in that old garage more that fifteen years ago.

Why should people listen to your band?

Music a great way of communication. We believe it can tell you so much more than any words.
It’s about feelings and thoughts you can’t describe any other way.
And we hope that our music can make our listeners feel the same we did in some periods of our lives.
Bands we love and their music changed our lives. Still changing.
May be our music can also give somebody strength to move on no matter what, an inspiration to make this world better.
To be serious we’d like out listener to feel and remember all that energy,
that we try to put in our music, as well as in our live performances.
And for a moment to forget about an unavoidable fate and inevitable running of time.

What is your ideal touring line-up?

Interesting question. I definitely would say that some of them would be Rage Against the Machine, Machine Head and Muse.

What was the first record you bought when you were younger?

I was ten, when my dad bought me the first cassette  player. And with it I had Metallica, Iron Maiden, Halloween and Prodigy albums.

What artists first inspired you to start playing music?

I started actually as hip-hop beats producer, while studying at school – so, some rap guys, I think.

Actually after that I played guitar in few metal bands, and I started to play guitar listening to Iron Maiden and AC/DC… plus a lot of KORN!

What’s the most aesthetically pleasing album cover that you have in your collection?

I have a lot of vinyls, and one of my favorites album covers is Mastodon’s Once More Round The Sun.

What kind of movie genre do you think your music would best be the soundtrack for?

Science fiction films, like Interstellar.

Recommend us a record, a book, and a movie…

Speaking about a Weesp record, you start with Who We Are!

Record: Iron Maiden – Speed of Light
Book: Robert Jordan – The Eye of the World
Movie: Firefly (TV series)
